New Year, No New Clothes
2021! New year, new me… but not really. But I do have new goals for the year and new things I want to achieve. One of my goals for the year is to amp up my $$$ savings, so with my wallet feeling quite light after the holiday season, and after receiving an embarrassing number of packages throughout November/December, I challenged myself to not by any new clothes in January.
Now, I did have two clothing packages arrive during January, BUT they were for orders I placed int he boxing day sales, so money spend during December doesn’t count.
Challenge: complete! I didn’t buy a single thing.
It was actually easier than I expected. Because we’re in a strict lockdown here in Ontario, I don’t have anywhere to wear new clothes. I already have a wardrobe full of new clothes that I amassed during 2020 that I still need to debut.
One of the things that strangely really helped me was when we were looking at booking a trip to Mexico in May (although, the outlook on that holiday looks grim right now). What I really wanted to do was save my money and put some aside so that when May rolled around, I had a few hundred dollars saved up that I had dedicated to holiday clothes and wouldn’t feel guilty about it. That was the goal I was working towards. Now, even though the odds of us getting to Mexico in May are pretty slim, I still have hope and I still want to have that cash set aside in case we do!
What I’ve found is that setting little goals like these actually made it easier to not spend because I could visualize the greater purpose of my actions. I need to start doing this with more aspects of my life, breaking bigger goals down into little chunks that are more manageable and achievable.
So here I am again, challenging myself to not buy any clothes again during February. It’s only a 4 week month so it should be easier! I am after a new pair of Air Force 1’s so I may have to make an exception… but shoes don’t count as clothes right!?
Feeling very good about the achievement I have made so far and am hoping this is the start of the successful year i have been manifesting.
